How to Find the Right Podcast to Market Your Book

Hey Reader,

I've been thinking about our world lately, and how it seems that everything is going to S***. However, I always remind myself of one important constant: I can always make the world a better place!

What does that mean? Do I need to start a non-profit?

Nope!

I can make a big difference by doing a simple act of kindness: holding a door, complimenting someone on their outfit, or sharing a smile and a friendly "Hello!" Don't believe that little acts of kindness make a huge difference in someone's life?

In my previous life, I was a STEM teacher in middle school. We had trainings...LOTS of THEM! One training we took annually was on preventing teen suicide. The instructor told us a story about a boy who was bullied at school. He had decided he was going to take his life, so he cleared out his locker and carried a heavy pile of books on his walk home. At one point, the stack lost its balance, and the books toppled over. Another boy from his school came over and helped him stack his books again.

That one act of kindness changed the boy's mind. And he became best friends with the boy who stopped to help him with that ONE act of kindness.

So if you ever doubt your ability to make a difference, think of the boy who was bullied and his new friend who literally gave him a new lease on life - a reason to live! We are all important members of our community, and we need to find what connects us instead of focusing on our differences.

Because when it comes down to it, WE are ALL Humankind.

Reply back and tell me your one act of kindness you offered to another human this week :)

Here's a story for you... πŸ“š

In my last newsletter, I shared my experience in podcasting. Being a podcast host, I understand how frustrating it is to be spam-pitched constantly. Then, when I reply back that the fee is $250 to guest on my show, the agent responds, "Oh, well, my client doesn't want to pay to be on your show!"

Oh, so it's OK for them to pay YOU, but it's not OK for them to pay ME?

Well, I don't know about you, my friend, but I don't work for free. That's called slavery!

However, if I invite a guest on my show (because I know they will bring significant value and cross-promote my show), I don't charge them a guest fee. Reciprocation is the name of the game in the Creator Economy.

But how can you, as an author without a podcast, get into the loop and be considered for an interview on a top podcast?

Let's unpack this challenge... πŸ“¦

🎯 Does this podcast's audience align with the readers I am trying to reach?

🎯 What specific value can I bring to this host and their listeners that makes me worth inviting?

🎯 Am I prepared to cross-promote this episode to my own audience if the host invites me on?

🎯 Have I built enough of a presence or platform that a podcast host would see me as a credible, worthwhile guest?

Now, let's break this down... 🧩

1. Define your ideal podcast audience before you pitch a single show. Get specific about who you are trying to reach with your book, then search for podcasts where that exact listener already shows up. When your audience and the host’s audience overlap, you bring built-in value to the conversation, and your pitch practically writes itself.

2. Build a one-page guest profile that leads with what you give, not what you want. Before reaching out to any host, put together a clear, concise document that outlines your topic, your talking points, and what their listeners will walk away with. Hosts are looking for guests who make their show better. Show them upfront that you are that guest.

3. Grow your own platform, so hosts have a reason to say yes. Even a modest but engaged following on LinkedIn, a Substack newsletter, or an active social presence signals to a host that you will bring people to their show, not just borrow their audience. Start building now, before you pitch, because reciprocation only works when both sides have something to offer.

πŸ’‘Final Thoughts:

The fastest way to stand out as a pitch-worthy guest on a podcast is to lead with generosity before you ever hit send. Offer the host a reciprocal interview on your platform, a live video promotion, or a dedicated blurb in your newsletter. Show them you're already thinking about how to send your audience their way. That single gesture separates serious authors from everyone else!

And one more thought: leave your degrees out of the pitch. No podcast host has ever booked a guest with sixteen credentials after their name. What they care about is whether you can hold a conversation, serve their audience, and show up ready to deliver. Lead with your story, your insight, and your generosity. That is what gets you invited back.

🀝 Client Testimonial of the Week: I recently took a poll on LinkedIn, asking my followers if they felt that using a ghostwriter translates to authentically telling your story. About two-thirds of respondents said no. The perception is that ghostwriters do ALL the work, while the author does none. That's simply not the case. My authors can be as involved as they want when we write their book together, which strongly maintains their voice. It also highly depends on your writer or editor and their approach to working together.

"After I finished writing my manuscript, I knew I'd want to find a team to help me bring it to the next level prior to publishing. I took a ton of meetings, phone calls, and Zooms until I landed on Write For You. I wanted my voice and story to feel like mine while going through a 'polish,' and that's exactly what she did. Lynn respected my story and my writing style. She offered suggestions but never pushed her own style on me. I never felt like I wasn't still in control of what was a very personal project for me. The working process was smooth and very quick. If I could give her a higher rating, I would!"

Hey Reader, Gardening, gardening, gardening. Lots of tomatoes, purple potatoes, string beans and sunflowers. I've been eating watermelon gazpacho with the fresh tomatoes and basil from my garden. One of my favorite garden experiences? Smelling the warm garden goodness of tomato plants and tomatoes on the vine in the summer! Hey Reader, If you like a great dystopian story, with so many plot twists you're having to watch every recap to keep up with the story line, then I would highly recommend watching SILO on Apple TV. Not giving away any spoilers, but I will say this: The actress they chose for the main protagonist, Juliette, is phenomenal, as are many of the cast members. They are truly believable! Excellent plot, fabulous acting, and a world so immersive you'll find yourself thinking about it long after the...

Hey Reader, Gardening, and finding the right plants for your garden, can be tricky. Sometimes I feel more like a scientist doing an experiment than a gardener! Luckily, you eventually find out what works by trial and error, and gathering data. Using native plants is also helpful, but you need to figure out which plants work for your garden, how much you want to invest, and which plants are the most attractive. Then you have a short-list of plants you want to maintain, taking the guesswork out...
